The benefits of Korean skincare have gained worldwide attention. Korea’s natural dedication to maintaining skincare coupled with years of scientific research has led to the availability of an excellent array of skincare products entering the global market. However, with Korean skincare, reaping the benefits is not just about the products but how you use them.
If you’ve been considering adopting a Korean skincare but have been unsure of the steps to take, fear not – we’ve put together our guide to the perfect introduction. The Korean skincare routine involves 10 steps – but don’t despair that you might not be able to incorporate so many steps into your daily routine. In fact, these 10 steps are the most simple yet beneficial routine you can follow.
Here’s what you need to do:
Cleansing is one of the most critical but often most neglected elements of a person’s skincare routine. The Korean skincare routine recommends a double cleanse, with the first part being a gentle removal of make-up and contaminants using cleansing oil.
Having cleansed the outer layers of your face with a cleansing oil, next used a water-based cleanser to ensure a deep cleanse of the pores without damaging or stripping the skin.
One of the most common misunderstandings regarding skincare routine is that “cleansing” and “exfoliating” are one of the same. Exfoliate with a microfibre exfoliator cloth to remove any dead skin cells remaining after your cleanse.
Toning the skin helps to restore balance and replace any natural oils that are lost during cleansing or simple exposure to everyday environments. However, be sure to use a hydrating toner that is alcohol-free to truly reap the benefits and prevent further stripping of the skin.
When time allows, complement your toning with a hint of skincare essence. Essence is considered a staple element of Korean skincare maintenance as it provides active ingredients that prove hydration beyond that of your toner.
A sheet mask isn’t a daily requirement – very few of us have the time for that! However, once a week, it’s important to introduce this step into your routine to give the skin some extra TLC and nourishment.
Applying a couple of drops of serum to your face takes mere seconds but can have a huge difference on skin maintenance long term. While not detrimental to not use serum everyday, Korean skincare routine emphasise use of a serum after nights out, when struggling with poor sleep or when experiencing a particular issue such as dark circles or puffiness.
The skin around the eyes is ever so delicate and so deserves daily attention, at least at night time. Giving this area the little TLC it needs can go a long way to preventing and improving the appearance of fine lines.
Perhaps the most essential element of a Korean skincare routine (alongside cleansing) is to moisturise. Moisturising is simply a non-negotiable task. Ensure to use a moisturiser designed specifically for your skin type and apply daily both in the morning and before bed.
The Korean skincare routine highly advocates that sunscreen is not just for Summer; it’s an everyday necessity – and a key secret to why Korean skin ages so well. Try to choose a moisturiser or make-up foundation, which includes SPF protection to enable daily skincare protection from the sun.
Like any and every routine, practice makes perfect. Adopting a new skincare routine might seem tedious, but the steps above each take mere minutes, with some required just weekly. So we ask that you just give it a try this month – trial it for one month solid and see how you go. We promise you’ll be hooked by the results – and the steps will become part and parcel of your daily routine!
